Five Indian cities to visit this winter

Looking to enjoy a chilly vacation? There are plenty of cool destinations in the country. The best possible way to start the New Year is to go on a winter vacation. So what are the best winter vacation locations in India?

Here is a quick overview.

Mount Abu (Rajasthan)

The Diwara Jain temples are only about 2½ kilometers from Mount Abu. Built between the 11th and 13th century AD, these temples are known for their impressive use of marble. There are five temples and they are some of the most sacred places of worship for the Jains.

Mount Abu is the only hill station in Rajasthan. It is famous for the Dilwara Jain Temples, Nakki Lake and Achalgarh Fort.

Diu

Diu is a Union Territory. It is known for its beaches, churches and chapels. Diu is a good place to visit this winter. Festa De Diu, the longest beach festival of Asia is going on at the moment. It will wind up on February 15, 2016.

Chennai

Mahabalipuram five rathas

The Pancha Rathas (five chariots) of Mahabalipuram are some of the finest examples of India’s monolithic rock-cut architecture. Built in the 7th century AD, the monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each one of the five monuments in the complex resembles a chariot. They are carved over a single granite stone.

Chennai is one of the hottest cities in India. In winter, however, this southern city has lovely weather. Enjoy the cool breeze while exploring the city or drive to Pondicherry through the East Coast Road. Mahabalipuram (also known as Mamallapuram) is only around 60 km from Chennai. If you visit this old town in January, you will also be able to enjoy the Indian Dance Festival. It will come to a close on January 21, 2016.

Gangtok

Gangtok is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim. In winter the day time temperatures range between 15 – 17 degrees Celsius. At night, the temperature can dip to 2 – 3 degrees. Aritar is a small town about 2-3 hours from Gangtok. It is known for its scenic landscape.

Udaipur

Udaipur is a royal city worth visiting. There are several magnificent palaces. Chief among them are Monsoon Palace, City Palace and Lake Palace. Udaipur is also home to Fateh Sagar Lake and Lake Pichola.
