Dakshina Mookambika Temple North Paravur, Kerala
North Paravur in the Ernakulam district of Kerala is famous for its Dakshina Mookambika temple. This temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati is accorded the same status as the Kollur Mookambika temple in Mangalore. Here the Goddess is worshipped as Bala Parameswari. There is a lotus pool around the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.
Tampuran, the erstwhile ruler of Paravur, was a great devotee of Mookambika Devi. Every year, he used to go to the Mookambika temple to offer worship. As he grew old, ill health prevented him from visiting the temple. This saddened him deeply. One night, while he was sleeping Mookambika Devi appeared in his dream and told him to construct a temple for her near his palace so that he could have her darshan every day without any difficulty. Tampuran did so. Thus, the Dakshina Mookambika temple was built around 500 years ago. The temple complex also has small shrines for Lord Ganesha, Subrahmanya, Vishnu, Hanuman and Veerabhadra. In the southwest corner, there is also a shrine dedicated to Yakshi.
A unique aspect of the offerings at this temple is the Kashaya Nivedyam in the evening. Kashayam is a herbal concoction. It is prepared using various herbs according to traditional methods and has medicinal properties.
Navaratri is the major festival celebrated here. Hundreds of children get initiated into the world of letters on the day of Vijayadashami. The 10 day annual festival is celebrated in the month of Makaram (January/February)
Devotees can get darshan of the Goddess between 5 am and 11 am in the morning and between 5 pm to 7.30 pm in the evening.
