Pookode Lake in Wayanad

Tourists are making a beeline to the Pookode Lake at Kalpatta in the Wayanad district of Kerala. This picturesque lake is the second largest fresh water lake in Kerala. Pookode Lake is the most popular tourist destination in Wayanad, Kerala. This fresh water lake attracts tens of thousands people to Pookode each month.

Over the last few years, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of people visiting the Pookode Lake. According to the District Tourism Promotion Council, 4,56,456 people visited Pookode in 2011. That figure rose to 9,23,391 in 2015.

The Pookode Lake is about 770 meters above sea level. This freshwater lake and its surroundings are a feast for the eyes. Tourists flock to the Lake to savor its untainted beauty and the fresh air.

The Lake is open for tourists between 9 am and 6 pm. Boating in the lake is permitted up to 5 pm. Rowing and pedal boats are available. The rowing boats can accommodate up to 7 people. Other attractions at Pookode include the children’s park, the cafeteria, and the store selling handicrafts and spices. The handicrafts store sells items made of coconut husk and bamboo. Fisheries department also runs a seafood kitchen in Pookode.

The Pookode Lake and its surroundings are famous for their biodiversity. The lake has some varieties of fish which are only found here. The forests surrounding the lake are home to over 70 species of birds.

Pookode Lake is about 15 kms from Kalpetta. The rivulet Panamaram, which becomes Kabani River, originates from the Pookode Lake. The lake is spread across an area of 8.5 hectares and has a maximum depth of 6.5 meters.

The lake has an abundance of fresh water lilies and blue lotus. There is also a fresh water aquarium near the lake.

How to reach there?

The Pookode Lake is about 60km from Kozhikode. Kozhikode is also the nearest railway station from where you can hire a taxi or board a bus. There are frequent bus services to this place. The nearest bus stop is Thalippuzha. Pookode is in the Wayanad district of Kerala. Tourists can reach the lake by road.

The best times visit the lake are mornings and evenings.
