In Kerala, the schools reopen after the summer vacation on June 1. The rains almost always hit the state on this day, but no one complains. The rains provide that much needed respite from the summer heat. The beauty of the monsoon is that it will change the climate overnight.
Rains in Kerala are a real delight because they don’t interfere with the normal flow of life. While the rainy season lasts 4 months, it never rains incessantly. A rain might last one or two hours and then the sun will peep through the drenched palm fronds and people will go about their life as usual. It will rain again a few hours later. Sometimes the rainy spell may last a few days on end.
Kerala receives rains for about five months a year. No wonder, the state almost always looks wrapped in emerald greens.
The South West monsoon usually arrives in Kerala in the first week of June. Kerala is the first state to receive the rains in mainland India. From here the rains will advance rapidly towards the north. The whole of India looks the most beautiful during this season. The rains will recede by the end of September.

Thunderclouds herald the arrival of the northwest monsoon in Kerala. The billowing clouds sailing on the northwest winds are a breathtaking sight. The northwest monsoon arrives in mid-October. Since these rains fall in the evening, there is little disruption to life. By 5 pm thunder clouds will have formed all over the skies. Celestial fireworks will follow immediately accompanied by torrential downpours.
